Part 2: The Promise Didn't Change - Your Perspective Did

Key Scripture: Numbers 13:27–30

"Let us go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it."

Numbers 13:30 (KJV)

In Part 1, we talked about decision time.

Israel stood at the edge of promise with a decision before them. Twelve spies had gone into the land. Twelve came back after seeing the same land, the same fruit, the same cities, and the same giants. But they did not come back with the same perspective.

Ten saw a reason to retreat.

Two saw a reason to advance.

Here is what I want you to understand:

The promise never changed. Their perspective did.

God did not change His mind because giants were in the land.

God knew the giants were there when He made the promise!

Let that sink in.

Before Israel ever saw the giants, God saw them.

Before Israel knew about the fortified cities, God knew about them.

Before Israel understood the battles that would be required to possess the land, God had already declared that the land belonged to them.

The presence of opposition did not cancel the promise.

What Did You Expect the Promise to Look Like?

Sometimes our greatest battle is not with the enemy. It is with our expectations.

We hear God say, "I am giving it to you," and somehow we interpret that to mean, "It will be easy."

We hear promise and assume there will be no process.

We hear victory and assume there will be no battle.

We hear possession and assume there will be no giants.

But what happens when you arrive at the place God promised and discover something standing in it?

What happens when the door opens, but there is still opposition?

What happens when God says, "This belongs to you," but everything you see says otherwise?

That is where perspective becomes critical.

The ten spies looked at the land through the size of the giants.

Caleb looked at the giants through the size of his God.

Same land.

Same giants.

Different perspective.

Stop Reinterpreting What God Said

Some of us are standing at the edge of promise, but because the promise doesn't look the way we expected, we have started questioning what God said.

Did God really tell me this?

Did I hear Him correctly?

Maybe this isn't my season.

Maybe I should turn around.

Wait a minute!

What changed?

Did God change His Word?

Or did your perspective change when you saw the opposition?

You were confident before you saw the giant.

You were shouting before you saw the wall.

You were declaring the promise before you saw what it would cost to possess it.

Now the circumstances have changed, and suddenly you're questioning a Word that you were once sure came from God.

Don't allow new information to make you abandon an old Word from God.

If God spoke it, go back to what He said.

The Fruit Was Evidence

This part gets me.

The spies didn't return empty-handed.

They brought back evidence!

Numbers 13 tells us that they cut down a cluster of grapes so large that it had to be carried between two men on a pole.

They were literally carrying proof that God had told the truth.

They tasted the promise.

They touched the promise.

They carried evidence of the promise back into the camp.

And still, ten of them said, "Nevertheless..."

Numbers 13:28 says:

"Nevertheless the people be strong that dwell in the land..."

There it is.

Nevertheless.

Yes, God said it...

Nevertheless.

Yes, I've seen His faithfulness...

Nevertheless.

Yes, He opened the door...

Nevertheless.

Yes, there is evidence that the promise is real...

Nevertheless, there are giants.

Be careful with your "nevertheless."

Don't let what comes after your "but" become greater than everything God said before it.

Are You Seeing Yourself Correctly?

Then the spies revealed the real problem.

Numbers 13:33 says:

"And we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight."

Did you catch that?

Before they told us how the giants saw them, they told us how they saw themselves.

"We were in our own sight as grasshoppers."

Their perspective of themselves became part of their defeat.

The giants did not call them grasshoppers.

They called themselves grasshoppers.

Sometimes the enemy doesn't have to diminish you because you've already diminished yourself.

You've forgotten who sent you.

You've forgotten who called you.

You've forgotten who brought you out.

You've forgotten who has been walking with you.

Israel wasn't just twelve spies standing before giants.

They were covenant people carrying a promise from Almighty God.

You are not standing before your giant alone.

You are standing there with a Word.

And when God sends you, you must stop measuring yourself against what you're facing and start measuring what you're facing against the God who sent you.

Caleb Saw Something Different

Then Caleb spoke.

Numbers 13:30 says:

"Let us go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it."

I love Caleb's response.

He didn't ask for another committee meeting.

He didn't ask for another scouting trip.

He didn't say, "Let's wait and see."

He said:

Let's go.

Why?

Because Caleb understood something the others had forgotten.

If God said the land belonged to them, then the giants were occupying something that had already been promised to Israel.

The giants were big.

But they were in the wrong place.

Some of you need to change how you see the opposition standing in front of you.

You keep looking at the giant as though you are trespassing on its territory.

But what if the giant is standing in yours?

🔥 Check your perspective.

What have you allowed circumstances to make you question?

What promise have you started doubting because you discovered giants attached to it?

Go back to what God said.

The giant did not change the promise.

The battle did not change the promise.

The delay did not change the promise.

The opposition did not change the promise.

The promise is still the promise.

Don't change your confession because your perspective changed.

Adjust your perspective until it agrees again with what God spoke.

You are standing at the edge of promise

Don't turn around now.

🔥 The promise didn't change. Make sure your perspective doesn't keep you from possessing it.

Prayer

Father, correct our perspective wherever fear has distorted what we see. Forgive us for allowing giants to become greater in our minds than Your Word. Remind us of everything You have spoken and everything You have already done. We refuse to see ourselves as grasshoppers when You have called us to possess the land. Give us the perspective of Caleb to see every obstacle through the greatness of our God. We will not retreat because giants have appeared. We will stand on what You spoke, move when You say move, and possess everything You have ordained for us. In Jesus' name, Amen.
